Septic Tank
Areas with no direct connection to main sewer lines use private sewage treatment septic systems. Wastewater is removed from the home into a septic tank, where it is separated into solids and liquid. Heavy solids sink to the bottom of the tank and form a layer of sludge, and light solids float to the top of the tank and form a layer of scum. The anaerobic bacterial environment in the watertight tank decomposes the sludge and scum layers into effluent liquid that is then discharged to a drain field - also called a leach field. Wastewater trickle out of the perforated pipes that make up the leach field and filter through a serious of underground trenches filled with gravel. Through this filtration process effluent liquid is neutralized from harmful components, and is sent as potable water to nearby water sources.
Unbroken sludge and scum must be pumped out of a septic tank on a regular basis, otherwise over accumulation of waste solids will flow into drain field and block system beyond repair. LA plumbers will be happy to advise septic tank users on how to keep the system clog free. Apart from lack of regular maintenance, other common causes of septic tank failure are poor design, faulty installation and water overload.
Signs of Septic Tank Failure

-Excessive plant growth on drain field
-Sewage odors in and around home
-Surface flow of wastewater near septic tank
